The Junction

Located on the periphery of Cromwells Old Town, above the banks of the former Kawarau River, the Junction aims to re-establish the area as a key node within the town, drawing regular visitors to the area through the provision of currently unfulfilled community amenities.
Explored through the lens of ‘vernacular’ being a process, not a typology or visual style, the Junction’ became an exercise in meeting functional needs through a deeply process driven design. It is rooted in research, rigorous testing of ideas and the pursuit of multifunctionality in all building elements. Viewed within its context ‘The Junction’ poses a method of reactivating marginalised urban areas through the understanding of their history, the needs of their community, and what their projected future holds.
